You may wonder whether it’s possible to have a healthy relationship with food. Food may be a source of comfort, pre-occupation, stress, love, discipline, obsession and anxiety all at once. Can you even imagine what it would be like to be free to eat what you like when you like, without feeling guilt, shame or anxiety?

Telling yourself that you can’t or shouldn’t have a particular food, can lead to intense feelings of deprivation that turn into uncontrollable cravings and, often, binge-eating. When you finally “give-in” to your forbidden food, eating will be experienced with such intensity, it usually results in overeating, and overwhelming guilt.

I know what it’s like. Like you, I have had an unhealthy relationship with food and my own body. Being in the fitness industry didn’t help either, as I was surrounded by lots of people fixated on weight loss and body image. I constantly felt that I wasn’t thin enough, pretty enough, or good enough and I was well and truly stuck on the diet merry-go-round. Fortunately I discovered the “Intuitive Eating” approach which showed me how to make peace with food and my own body.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Intuitive Eating helps you become the expert on your own body and what it needs to be happy and healthy.

When I began Intuitive Eating I was able to find my natural groove with food and can now include all foods into my life. I eat more on some days than I do on others. I don’t have to finish everything on my plate, but I also don’t have to only eat half if I need more to be satisfied. I am able to moderate myself in this balanced way, because I am connected to my body’s internal cues of hunger, fullness and satisfaction. As a result I know what feels right for me. I also move my body in ways that feel joyful, rather than punishing myself with exercise.

Giving yourself unconditional permission to eat what you want, when you want, and how much you want, means you are more likely to be satisfied with all aspects of your eating experience (i.e. taste, pleasure, and quantity). As a certified Intuitive Eating Coach, I will teach you to listen to your body’s natural hunger and fullness signals. You will learn to distinguish between emotional and physical hunger cues. You will regain your natural sense of body wisdom or maybe find it for the first time in your life. No-one knows better what you need than you and you will find the courage to trust yourself and your body. I made peace with food and my body. So can you.

You will learn about appetite, about what your body needs, about how to satisfy hunger, and about what foods work for you. 

As an Intuitive Eater you can give up your food rules, meal plans and calorie counting. You will listen to your body and allow this to guide you while choosing foods based on their pleasure and satisfaction factor.

I will teach you to embrace positive feelings towards eating, exercise and your body. Eating will become a pleasurable and enjoyable aspect of life, rather than something that makes you feel you are “good” or “bad” depending on what you have eaten. When you learn to trust your body’s natural cues for hunger, fullness and cravings, when it needs rest, movement and nourishment, you will get to know this beautiful part of you. Your body will become your friend rather than your enemy.  I can support you to develop the skills, knowledge and awareness to love your body, your food and yourself everyday. Listening to your hunger, eating the foods that you really like, and paying attention to your body are the best way to maintain a healthy body and mind for life.

When to eat

You may be eating at set mealtimes because of habit or because other people are eating. After years of following rules about the “best times to eat” you may be ignoring your body’s natural hunger signals. I help you listen to your body’s hunger and eat at the times when you and your body really need nourishment.

What to eat

If you have been on diets or avoided certain foods for a long time, you may no longer know what foods you genuinely enjoy. I will support you to discover the foods you really want to eat, without rules and restrictions.

How much to eat

You may feel scared about the idea that you will eat too much if you are not following a meal plan or counting calories. When you establish trust in your own hunger signals, you will know how much food to eat in a given moment. I will support you in understanding how much you need to eat in order to feel satisfied, and to meet your daily energy requirements.

Amanda Bos is a Life Coach and Professional Group Fitness Instructor. Her role as an Intuitive Eating Coach involves restoring healthy relationships with food, exercise, mind and body through the philosophy and concepts of Intuitive Eating.

She offers one-on-one coaching with her clients and helps them to reconnect with their inborn intuitive eater.
